Has your calling in life ever failed you? Have you had times when you thought God was calling you towards one path only to have it completely crumble at your feet? Maybe just when you muster enough strength to try again, you realize that it doesn’t matter anymore because you have no desire in the calling God was pushing you towards.
I always thought I knew what my calling in life was, but I was wrong. My calling has changed three or four times already. I went from wanting to work overseas in a foreign country taking care of orphans, to wanting to be in ministry, to writing online, to going to wanting to be a teacher. Time and time again, I feel like I know my calling, or I will be in my calling for a time, only to have it all change around me.
Maybe the calling that you have in life is one that you never thought you would have had. I never thought I would be a writer. That calling just wasn’t even in the question for me. So when God started calling me to write, I had no idea what to even think of that calling. When I started in ministry, I had no clue what I was doing. I was just following the calling that I had on my life. But my calling hasn’t always been easy. There have been times when I wanted to quit or just give up because it didn’t work out like I had planned or it had completely crumbled beneath my feet.
Who Do You Place You Identity In?
The more that I realize that my calling will never be able define me, the more that I realize my need for Jesus.
Without even realizing it, I have allowed myself to be defined by the things that I am doing or what my current calling is. However, when that calling seems to come crumbling down, where is my identity placed? If you were to strip it all away, who would you be?
Where is your identity found in? When you are no longer identified by the career you hold or the title that have?
You are a realtor – until the market crashes
You are a wife – until your marriage ends through death
You are a business woman – until the business fails
You are a student – until you graduate
It seems like with each new calling that God places on your heart challenges you more than the last. But soon after you adjust to your new career or calling and you being to be comfortable in what you are doing, you slowly begin to take it on as an identity.
Our job descriptions are only a temporary identity that we take on. Sometimes it can be easier to live by the title that you have at work. Your identity from your title at work can slowly become what we identify in. The world will try and do all it can to define you by what your calling is. It will tell you that you are never good enough and that you need to keep striving to further your calling
Why Your Calling Doesn’t Define You
Your calling does not define who you are. You are defined by who you are in CHRIST!! There is nothing else in this world that can define you.
If my identity was only found in what I did, then I would never be truly content. I would always be striving to seek approval from men so that I would be able to keep my identity. If I ever failed in anything, which I have time and time again, I would have no identity.
There are still days when I question my calling and wonder why I am called to write. But I am so much more than a writer, or a daughter, or a sister, or student, or a friend. I am not defined by the temporary things of this world. Instead, I am defined by who I am in Christ!
There is such a peace that comes with knowing that who you are in Christ. Knowing that no matter what happens with your job or if you don’t succeed according to the worlds standards, that God’s love for you is infinitely more than you could ever being to imagine! He doesn’t look at you for what your status is or for what career you have. No. He looks at you for who you are in Him! Darling, that will never ever change! His love for you will be the same yesterday, today, and forever!
No matter what God calls you to do in life, never forget that who you are in Him is more important than anything else in this world! Don’t forsake your relationship with him to further the calling on your life. Rather, know who you are and who (God) defines you, and then seek to live out your calling.
With each new calling that the Lord places on your life is a season of new excitement and hope. Our calling can be a wonderful journey because it is a journey that we get to take with the Lord. You may have seasons where your calling is the same for years but then you may have a calling which only lasts for a couple of months. We can never fully understand what God is doing. But, through it all we know that God has a plan and that He has called us His chosen ones.
Remember, Darling, you are not defined by the calling on your life. You are defined by who you are in Christ and nothing will EVER be able to change that fact!
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” -1 Peter 2:9
