I was so tired. All I needed was some rest. Maybe if I just took a day for me time it would help. It wasn’t just the 2pm work slump or the early mornings and late nights I kept. It was more than that. I just needed a day that was for me. One where I could binge watch my favorite shows, take all the naps I wanted, or just stay at home and relax all day.
So I finally had my day. I planned it all out that I was just going to relax. No hanging out with friends, no to-do lists, no homework, and no plan for the day. A little self-care and relaxation should take care of the tiredness that I just couldn’t seem to shake. I spent the day watching my favorite movies, took a nap, and was just all-in-all a little lazy. Strangely enough though, after my day of designated self-care, I didn’t feel like I had any more energy than I had starting the day out. Instead, I still felt tired and worn-out.
Why Self-Care Doesn’t Equal Rest
The idea of self-care is to make sure that you are taking care of yourself and while this is always good to make sure you are doing, it’s not the same as truly resting. Think about it this way, if there is something tragic happening in your life, or if you are having a bad day, what is the first thing you do? I know that my top priority at that moment isn’t making sure that my room is clean or that I’ve written my detailed to-do list.
Instead, the first thing that I want to do when something is going on in my life or for example, when I was overwhelmed with school, is to spend some time with God. This is the best kind of medicine for a broken heart or a life that is seemingly out of control.
Rest isn’t found in me-time or it’s counterpart, self-care. True rest and comfort can only be found in the Lord. I’ve had various seasons in my life that have had its fair share of worries or times that I am in need of rest. How I have handled those days of tiredness depended upon my strength in the Lord. The days where I thought I just couldn’t go on any longer because I was so overwhelmed and tired. The days where I needed to rely on His strength to get me through the day.
Where To Find True Rest
True rest is only found by spending time with Jesus! I want to encourage you to pick up your bible each morning and to lay all of your cares and worries at His feet. Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” All you have to do is rely on the One who has more strength than you will ever have. Rely on the One who will give you true rest. Place all of who you are at the feet of the One who loves you! The One who gave His life for you!
The feet of the One who will always be there for you.
The feet of the One whose shoulders are broad enough to carry every single worry that you could ever think of.
The feet of the One who lied His life down for you at Calvary where His blood spilled out on the ground.
The feet of the One who knows every intimate detail about your life, including all the secrets and dreams deep within your heart.
The feet of the One who will never leave you or let you down.
The feet of the One who has the ability to provide you with the rest that you need before you even know that you need it.
Even the Disciples Needed Rest
Can you imagine how it must have been to be walking with Jesus and getting to witness the miracles first hand? To hear the voice of Jesus, to walk where Jesus walked, and to know the Him personally? You and I can only imagine what that must have been like! Each day the disciples would wake up and have another day they would get to spend walking alongside their Savior. Each day would be another opportunity to minister to His people, the chosen ones in Israel. You would think that they would never have gotten tired of ministering to the people. But that wasn’t the case. The disciples were human after all.
Ministering to others can be draining. Jesus even knew this. We all have times in our life when we crave the rest that can only be found in Jesus! Mark 6 accounts the details of what Jesus told them when they needed rest:
“Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and
what they had taught. And He said to them, ‘Come aside by yourselves to a
deserted place and rest a while.’”
The Source of True Rest
There is a time where you just need to rest! It’s okay! True rest though is only found in the arms of Jesus! So Darling, take some time today to clear your schedule and spend some alone time with Jesus! So open up His love letter to you and allow the words to wash over your life.
If you need to, then change up your Bible reading routine a little. Find a new place to read your bible. If you normally read your bible in your room, then read it in the backyard. Pack a picnic lunch and take your bible and a journal to the park. Or find a local coffee shop and do your devotions there!
Darling, rest isn’t found in me-time or self-care. Rest is found when you spend time with the Lord each and every day! When you begin to grow in Him and develop a character like His! I want to encourage you to pursue the Lord more than you ever have before. To schedule time to spend with Him each day and watch how your life will go from stressful and tired to rested and alive in Him! He is the only one who can truly give you rest!
