I am so excited to be here today and talk with you about Modesty! My name is Taylor Jones. I am 25 years old and I am from Northeast Ohio. I am the author of the blog Modest Blondie. I started Modest Blondie back in 2015 because I felt like I needed something more in my life to keep me honest in my everyday dress. It’s been an amazing journey and I’ve met so many new friends who share the same love for cute, modest clothes!
What is Modesty?
Modesty- what is it? Wow, it’s so much more than just the clothes we wear, ladies. It’s a mindset, in my opinion; It’s a heart condition, if you will. Modesty is a choice we make to clothe our bodies with dignity. I think that a modest woman is free from vanity, and pretentiousness in all areas of her life- not just fashion. And as I write this I will just say that as a fashion blogger I find that it can be very easy to slip into those things. I’ve found that daily self-examination is essential and necessary for myself to make sure that my intentions and my outfits are genuinely modest. Someone with the ugliest heart could be clothed head to toe in unrevealing apparel and still be immodest in thought, and action, and intent. So, I think it’s so important to really take a look at ourselves (myself most definitely included) every once in a while and ask the question – why do I want to wear this? When I was younger I remember always wanting to push boundaries and try to get as close to “the line” as I could without crossing it- but is that really modesty? In my humble opinion, no. And I have to say that my good Mother raised me to think that way and I am so so thankful for that, especially as I get older and hope to one day have a daughter of my own. I want to recommend reading this book. It was an eye opening and difficult book for me to read at first because it really truly causes you to think and be honest with yourself and your intent on some of the things you might wear but it is really good tool.
Modesty is important to me because I believe God commands it of Women. And as a Christian, I am supposed to be different from the rest of the world- even in the way I dress.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
Think about all of the people you pass by on a single trip to the grocery store. You don’t talk to 99% of them, but what you are wearing speaks volumes. I believe we can show we are not like the rest of the world just by the clothes we choose to wear.
Why Wearing Clothes Modestly Shouldn’t Be Difficult
A few tips I have on finding modest clothes is of course- go online. I am short, so I don’t have as big of an issue finding skirts and dresses that come below my knees but I know that a lot of people struggle with this. I really don’t think there is an excuse though- there are so many Modest Clothing Boutiques online! I also recommend checking out places like Ann Taylor and Banana Republic- stores that are geared toward the working woman. I have found that they typically have very modest clothing and if you scour thredUP you will find they have GREAT deals on these higher end brands!
Also- if you are online, sometimes stores will offer not just “petite” but also “tall” options in skirts and dresses! I’ve found that if I am on the fence about the length of something and have the option to order it in a “tall” it works out great!
My favorite way to shop is secondhand. I buy most of my clothing from consignment shops, thredUP, and now Poshmark! I just think that it is so much more fun to find one of a kind pieces than going to the retail stores and buying what everyone else has.
Thank you so much for reading- I hope this has been encouraging! Make sure to stay tuned for all of the Modesty May guest posts!
